The Biggest Four Poker Mistakes
Making mistakes in poker is very common. The bottom line is how you deal with them. But first, the idea is to know what these mistakes are. Since there can be dozens of mistakes that poker players make, listed below are four major ones and how players can recognize and rectify them.
1. Raising bets with only a marginal
hand when in early position
While this may seem like a beginner’s mistake, it is one that is made by the most experienced of players. When you get a reasonably marginal hand, you tend to raise bets right then. The problem is that you may get re-raised and that will present a problem when you have to fold after already putting some chips into the pot. Since your opponents already know that you have raised from an early position, they will re-raise you only if they themselves have a good hand. When they do so, you know they are not afraid to bet. In which case you not only fold but lose out on chips as well.
2. Divulging important information about your game
It is important that you don’t let your play fall into patterns that can be recognized by opponents and used against you. For example, there are some players who bet big when they get strong hands and bet lower when they have bad hands. As long as you are consistent with this, the game goes well. But when you vary, you might run into some trouble. Like betting small when you have a strong hand and betting large when you just want to steal some blinds. An opponent may figure this out and re-raise you since he would have figured out you have a weaker hand.
3. Making very large or very
small bets.
Now, poker players bet for various reasons. They might be getting a player to fold, raise their bets or just call. It is on these factors that the betting amount should be based. If you want a player to call you, then your betting amount should be high. If you want them to fold, then your betting amount should be low. But in order to place these bets at the right time, you should know your opponents well and understand their tendencies. This will ensure that you bet strategically.
4. Laying the blame on
everything else except yourself
Poker is a game that requires constant self analysis and new strategy. Some players with a lot of experience begin to think of themselves as infallible and hence when they lose, they blame luck for their misfortune. This is a wrong attitude to have and it is essential that you don’t fall into this rut. Reinventing your game constantly will ensure you keep winning as well.
Learning lessons
One of the easiest ways in which
to remain aware of your mistakes and improve upon them is to maintain a log.
List those that have really cost you a lot of money. These losses should be
recorded and learnt from so that the next time you play, you know what
weaknesses you have to avoid. And these corrections will enable you to get the
winning pot.
